On Friday, Russian drone and missile strikes targeted residential buildings in Kyiv, resulting in at least 21 fatalities and more than 90 injuries. The attacks, described by Mayor Vitali Klitschko as the "most massive enemy attack," involved the deployment of 570 aerial objects, including nearly 500 drones.
Details of the Attacks on Kyiv
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the Russian military launched 24 Iskander ballistic missiles and approximately 50 cruise missiles during the assault. Among these were four Zircon hypersonic guided missiles, primarily designed to target naval vessels. Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency crews sift through the rubble of a nine-story apartment building that partially collapsed due to a direct hit.
According to Klitschko, the attacks caused significant damage across the city, with three dozen locations affected and a hotel roof igniting on Shevchenko Boulevard. The Ukrainian government has described the night as a "night of horror," with over 50,000 residents seeking shelter in subway stations following air raid warnings.
Wider Implications and Responses
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the attacks also impacted regions beyond Kyiv, including Kharkiv, where five people were wounded, and further strikes in Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Cherkasy. He reiterated calls for urgent air defense supplies, specifically requesting Patriot missiles to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities.
