On Thursday, a police operation identified 156 individuals involved in drug-facilitated sexual assault cases across seven countries. Europol reported that the victims were almost exclusively women, highlighting the disturbing trend of online networks that dehumanize victims.
Details of Operation Medusa
Operation Medusa, coordinated by Europol, involved law enforcement agencies from Germany, Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United States. The initiative focused on perpetrators who commit sexual violence within their social circles, often over extended periods.
Europol stated, "Investigations have uncovered online networks where perpetrators objectify and dehumanize victims." The use of encrypted messaging services and closed chat groups has facilitated the illegal trade of prescription medications and narcotics, allowing for detailed planning of these crimes.
Victim Awareness and Reporting
The German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) emphasized that many victims remain unaware they have been assaulted due to the use of sedatives, which prevent them from recalling the events. The BKA reported that victims often experience memory gaps and physical symptoms such as unexplained grogginess or bruises.
