Russian drone and missile strikes targeted Kyiv overnight, resulting in at least 27 fatalities and over 90 injuries. The attacks occurred on October 20, 2023, as part of a broader military campaign, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration. Emergency crews continue to search through the debris for trapped residents.
Details of the Attack on Kyiv
The assault involved a massive deployment of 570 aerial objects, with nearly 500 drones and multiple ballistic missiles, including 24 Iskander missiles and about 50 cruise missiles. Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, described it as the "most massive enemy attack" on the city. Rescue operations focused on a nine-story apartment building that partially collapsed due to a direct hit from a missile.
According to reports, three dozen locations across the city sustained damage. The Kyiv Metro reported that over 50,000 residents sought shelter in subway stations during air raid warnings issued by local authorities.
Ukrainian Response and International Reactions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating they extended beyond Kyiv with reported injuries in the Kharkiv and Kyiv regions. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for enhanced air defense supplies, including Patriot missiles, to protect against future assaults. He mentioned that the attacks were a retaliation for previous Ukrainian strikes targeting Moscow.
