Iran is preparing to hold the largest funeral in its history for former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at age 86 during missile strikes on February 28. The ceremonies, which will take place on July 9 in Mashhad, aim to unify the nation amidst ongoing tensions following the US-Iran conflict.
Khamenei's Funeral Details and National Mobilization
The funeral processions will begin on July 4, with three official days of mourning in Tehran. Authorities have mobilized supporters across the country, effectively shutting down businesses and work during this period. Alireza Zakani, the acting mayor of Tehran, stated that these ceremonies would be a historic assembly.
Preparations include extensive accommodations for visitors, highlighting the significance of the event. Khamenei will be buried on July 9 in Mashhad, his birthplace. Additionally, a procession will pass through Iraq's holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, signaling Iran's regional influence.
Khamenei's Legacy and Political Impact
Khamenei's leadership lasted for 37 years, characterized by intense micromanagement and a lack of concessions to political opponents, according to Mehrzad Boroujerdi, a political science professor. His tenure saw growing public dissatisfaction, culminating in protests such as the 2009 Green Movement and the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests in 2022.
