Germany's national football team faced another early exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay on Monday. Midfielder Jonathan Tah missed a crucial penalty, leading to a surge of racist comments on his social media. Following this, a false claim circulated that a petition was being organized against players of African and Muslim descent.
False Claims About a Racist Petition
The claim alleged that Deutsche Welle reported a petition seeking to ban certain players based on their ethnicity. This misinformation spread rapidly across social media platforms, including X and Facebook, where it garnered millions of views.
However, DW's Fact Check team confirmed that they did not report such a racist petition. They found no credible sources or evidence supporting the existence of this initiative, and the DFB (Germany's football association) stated it was unaware of any such petition.
DFB's Commitment to Diversity
The DFB emphasized its dedication to diversity and integration in football. A spokesperson stated, "The DFB is firmly committed to diversity, integration, and respectful coexistence. Discrimination, exclusion, and racist stereotyping have no place in football or in our society." This position underscores the organization's values amid the ongoing discourse about racism in sports.
