A diplomatic row has erupted between South Africa and Ghana following the reported killing of a Ghanaian man, Bashiru Isak, during anti-migrant protests in Cape Town on Tuesday. Ghana's Foreign Affairs ministry expressed profound shock over the incident, which South African officials have denied, claiming no record of a murder in the stated location.
Details of the Alleged Killing
According to Ghana's Foreign Affairs ministry, 40-year-old Bashiru Isak was shot dead in Khayelitsha, a township in Cape Town. The ministry has lodged a formal protest and filed a complaint with local police. South Africa's Justice Minister has denounced the claims, suggesting that Ghanaian authorities are disseminating false information regarding the situation.
South African police reported that while they have no record of Isak's murder, they are investigating the killing of another Ghanaian, Kwabena Boagen, aged 35, who was shot in an unrelated incident linked to extortion in Nyanga, another township. Boagen was approached at his barbershop by assailants demanding money before he was shot.
Reactions from Ghana and South Africa
In a statement, Ghana condemned the attack on Isak, asserting that "the taking of any life is unacceptable, and those responsible must be brought to justice without delay." Ghana demands a thorough investigation from South African authorities, urging them to ensure the safety and rights of foreign nationals within their borders.
