Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, announced his departure from the company this week, following a significant reorganization. This change was revealed in a memo to staff by Mark Chen, OpenAI’s chief research officer, as the company seeks to integrate its safety and research teams more effectively.
Restructuring of OpenAI’s Safety Teams
Heidecke’s exit comes as part of a broader restructuring initiative at OpenAI, aimed at improving coordination amidst increasing safety demands. In the memo, Chen noted that OpenAI's safety teams will now report directly to Mia Glaese, the company’s VP of research and head of alignment. Glaese will be expanding her role to include oversight of safety systems.
“The demands on safety continue to increase—we are training models at a much faster cadence, and release cycles have come down greatly in turn,” Chen stated. This restructuring highlights the growing importance of safety in the development of AI models.
Heidecke's Contributions and Future Plans
Joining OpenAI in 2021 as an AI safety analyst, Heidecke became the head of safety systems in 2024. His departure follows a trend of safety-focused leaders leaving the organization, including Joshua Achiam, OpenAI’s chief futurist, who also announced his resignation this week.
