Meta has withdrawn its new AI image feature, Muse Image, just days after its launch on July 11, 2026, due to significant backlash regarding privacy concerns. The tool, which allowed users to create AI-generated images from content on public Instagram accounts, faced criticism for automatically opting in users with public profiles.
Backlash Over Privacy Concerns
The introduction of Muse Image was part of Meta's broader initiative to integrate AI tools across its platforms. However, the feature led to immediate criticism as users were unaware that their likenesses could be used without consent. Sag-Aftra, the Hollywood union, heralded Meta's decision to retract the feature as a significant win for user rights.
Privacy advocates, including Privacy International, voiced their concerns, stating that the feature exemplified how AI companies often view personal data as mere resources for exploitation. “Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way,” Meta explained in their statement regarding the removal of the feature.
Details of the Muse Image Tool
Muse Image was launched as Meta's first venture into AI image generation, allowing users to tag public accounts and generate altered content quickly. However, the backlash prompted Meta to acknowledge that they had “missed the mark” and led them to make the feature unavailable.
