On July 2, 2026, in Mukdahan province, Thailand, nine Buddhist monks lost their lives after being struck by a pickup truck driven by an 11-year-old boy. The tragic incident occurred during a pilgrimage procession, resulting in several injuries among the monks and lay followers.

The procession included 35 monks and five lay followers walking along the road when the boy, who had taken his parents' vehicle without permission, lost control and collided with them. Police reported that five monks died at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries later at the hospital.
According to Police Major General Pairoj Thaiphutsa, investigations are ongoing to determine the legal ramifications for the child. He stated, "The suspect is a child. The vehicle has been taken for forensic examination to determine the cause." The boy is currently under the care of officials, including his guardians and a doctor.
