In a controversial move, the Trump administration has escalated its attacks on the Smithsonian Institution with the release of a 162-page report on July 4, 2023. The report, titled Saving America’s Story, accuses the Smithsonian of engaging in "extreme political activism" and promoting "anti-White activism." This document marks a significant intensification of President Trump’s ongoing campaign against diverse narratives in the portrayal of United States history.
The report specifically targets various museum exhibits, including a butterfly-shaped protest prop that symbolizes resilience among undocumented immigrants. Such criticisms highlight the administration's broader agenda to challenge institutions that it perceives as presenting narratives contrary to its political stance.
Isa Farfan, reporting on the situation, notes that this new document follows a previous directive from President Trump to investigate what he termed "race-centered ideology" at the Smithsonian. The Domestic Policy Council, appointed by Trump, authored the report and scrutinized how the National Museum of American History (NMAH) addresses critical topics like race, immigration, and gender.
