The £5m gift to Nigel Farage from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne has been reported to the National Crime Agency (NCA) due to concerns over potential money laundering. This revelation, first reported by the Guardian, intensifies scrutiny on the leader of Reform UK, who is currently facing an investigation regarding his failure to declare the funds.
Details of the £5m Gift
According to the Guardian, bankers flagged the transaction as suspicious, prompting the report to the NCA. The gift was given to Farage by Harborne, a known donor to Reform UK, raising questions about its origin and the timing of the transfers. Farage received part of the £5m after announcing on May 23, 2024, that he would not seek re-election, contradicting claims that the funds had no bearing on his political ambitions.
In correspondence with the Guardian, Harborne's lawyers stated that the funds were transferred on April 5, 2024, but did not respond to questions about the suspicious activity report (SAR) filed with the NCA. Farage, who did not disclose the gift to parliamentary authorities, argued that he was not obligated to do so as he was not a politician at the time.
Political Implications for Farage
The fallout from this financial scandal could be significant for Farage, who is preparing for a byelection in Clacton-on-Sea. Despite his attempts to distance himself from the controversy, including a video announcement at 2pm on Tuesday, opposition parties have labeled the upcoming election a “media circus.”
