On Tuesday, Savi Security introduced its new app aimed at safeguarding consumers against increasingly sophisticated AI-generated scams. Founded by brothers Patrick and Ryan Coughlin, the startup has raised $7 million in seed funding to tackle the growing threat of scams that use advanced technology to deceive everyday people.
Brothers launch innovative security solution
Patrick and Ryan Coughlin, both with extensive backgrounds in technology, were motivated to create Savi after a distressing incident involving their mother. Two years ago, she received a call from an impersonator claiming to have kidnapped her daughter, using a spoofed number and voice. Fortunately, the call turned out to be a scam, but it highlighted the urgent need for effective consumer protection.
“What has fundamentally changed in the underlying cybercriminal economy is that we are now able to leverage the same sophistication that was once aimed at government agencies and Fortune 500 companies against consumers,” said Patrick Coughlin. The brothers realized that the advent of affordable and powerful AI tools made it easier for scammers to target individuals.
Features of the Savi app designed to detect scams
The Savi app, available for both iPhone and Android, offers a range of features to help users identify potential scams. It can screen texts, voicemails, and incoming calls, but its standout capability is live-call monitoring. During a suspicious phone call, users can add a Savi agent as a listener to detect behavioral tells that indicate fraud.
