Police Scotland has launched an investigation into the finances of Yes Scotland, the campaign group for Scottish independence during the 2014 referendum, following a complaint regarding unaccounted funds exceeding £1.5 million. This inquiry was reported on July 5, 2026, after David Henry, who previously raised concerns about the Scottish National Party's finances, filed a complaint.
Details of the Missing Funds Allegation
The Sunday Mail revealed that the complaint highlighted discrepancies in Yes Scotland Ltd's financial records. Henry pointed out that the accounts from 2016 onward displayed a zero balance, while earlier records indicated that £1.5 million had seemingly vanished. Yes Scotland Ltd was established by former SNP leader Alex Salmond to lead the independence campaign but has been inactive since 2014.
The SNP has clarified that Yes Scotland Ltd operates as an independent entity, separate from the party. A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed, "We have received a complaint and inquiries are ongoing."
Context of the Investigation
This investigation follows the imprisonment of former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, who was convicted of embezzling over £400,000 from the party. His case was part of a broader inquiry, Operation Branchform, which scrutinized the financial activities of the SNP.
