Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, announced on July 5, 2026, that he will pay any outstanding council tax related to his houseboat in London. He believes he may owe between £3,000 and £4,000 to the London Borough of Waltham Forest, although he claims he has not received a formal bill.
Uncertainty Over Council Tax Liability
During an interview on BBC Breakfast, Polanski discussed the complexities of determining his tax obligations while living on a boat. He stated, "The council have still not reached a decision because they’re saying that at the marina where I was living, largely they’re paying business rates, which is what I assumed was what I was paying instead of council tax."
Polanski expressed his willingness to pay any amount owed, saying, "If I am found to owe any money, then of course I will pay that." He added that he was unsure of the exact amount he might owe, highlighting the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his tax situation.
Legal Considerations by Waltham Forest Council
The Waltham Forest council has indicated that it is seeking legal advice regarding the unique factors associated with moorings and council tax. Polanski mentioned that the council might determine that he does not owe anything at all due to the business rates already being paid by the marina.
