Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that certain Christian villages in southern Lebanon have requested to be annexed by Israel to safeguard themselves from Hezbollah militants. This declaration comes amid ongoing conflict in the region, which escalated on March 2 following a Hezbollah rocket attack on Israel.
Claims of Annexation by Christian Villages
During an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu asserted, "Christian villages in Lebanon, some of them have actually asked to be annexed to Israel, because we protect them against the Hezbollah, Hezbollah fanatics who want to kill them." His comments reflect the heightened tensions in the area as Israeli forces conduct airstrikes and maintain a military presence in southern Lebanon.
Despite Netanyahu’s claims, the mayor of the Christian village of Rmeish, Hanna al-Amil, denied the assertions, stating that the idea of annexation is "absolutely out of the question." Al-Amil emphasized that 15 Christian towns issued a statement denying Netanyahu's allegations just days prior, reaffirming their commitment to their national identity and the Lebanese flag.
Ongoing Conflict and Military Presence
Since the outbreak of hostilities, many Christian villages have faced significant challenges, including Israeli shelling and airstrikes, which have led to infrastructure damage and displacement. Despite evacuation orders, many residents have chosen to remain in their homes, protecting their properties and communities.
