On Monday, the Philippine Senate commenced the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, with over 6,000 police officers deployed around the Senate building. The trial, expected to last for 92 days, is accompanied by protests from both supporters and opponents of Duterte, marking a significant moment in Philippine political history.
Charges Against Sara Duterte
Duterte faces serious allegations, including misusing state funds and accumulating unexplained wealth. These charges stem from a vote by the House of Representatives, which is dominated by allies of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who overwhelmingly supported the impeachment.
Among the accusations is a public threat made by Duterte during a November 2024 livestream, where she suggested that someone should kill President Marcos if she were to be assassinated. During the opening session, prosecutors emphasized the corruption allegations, with Congresswoman Gerville Luistro stating, "If ordinary Filipinos are held to account, why not the most powerful government official? That is why the trial is important." Duterte has denied all wrongdoing and did not attend the Senate session.
The Political Landscape
This impeachment trial is unfolding against a backdrop of a growing feud between the Marcos and Duterte families. After winning the 2022 elections together, relations have soured, with Duterte accusing Marcos of conspiring with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to arrest her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, over his controversial anti-drug policies.
