On Monday, Donald Trump intervened in the World Cup 2026 controversy regarding USA striker Folarin Balogun's suspension after a red card incident during the round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Trump's request to FIFA to review the suspension has sparked significant backlash from Belgium and raised questions about political interference in sports.
Trump's Intervention and FIFA's Response
Trump, speaking at the White House, stated he did not believe Balogun's red card was warranted, declaring, "I thought it was two great athletes who crashed into each other and got entangled." His comments prompted FIFA to suspend the automatic match suspension for Balogun for a probationary period of one year, citing Article 27 which allows for the suspension of disciplinary measures.
This decision was announced just over 48 hours before the USA's quarterfinal match against Belgium, raising eyebrows about the influence of political figures in sports governance. Trump's post on Truth Social celebrated FIFA's decision, calling it a reversal of a "great injustice."
Belgium's Reaction to the Decision
In response to FIFA's ruling, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) issued a statement expressing their astonishment. Coach Rudi Garcia quipped, "I didn't know that 5 July was equal to 1 April at FIFA," indicating his disbelief at the ruling. The RBFA has since been granted the right to appeal the decision to a FIFA appeals committee.
