On Friday, Hamas announced plans to dissolve its governing body in Gaza, transferring power to a new administration known as the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). This decision follows an agreement made by the Board of Peace, which has been overseeing the implementation of a ceasefire agreement with Israel established last year.
Details of the Transition from Hamas to NCAG
Mohammed al-Farra, head of Hamas's emergency committee, has officially submitted his resignation, as stated by Hamas media spokesman Ismail al-Thawabta to the French news agency AFP. The move aims to facilitate a smooth transition of governance to the NCAG.
The NCAG was created under the framework of a peace deal brokered by the United States, which was signed last year. Despite this announcement, details regarding the timing and logistics of the handover remain unclear. Reports indicate that Israeli authorities have been blocking NCAG members from entering Gaza, complicating the transition process.
Challenges Facing the New Administration
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas presents significant challenges for the NCAG. Key issues include the complete disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The Israeli government has also been accused of obstructing the delivery of crucial aid to the region, further complicating the humanitarian situation.
