The LGBTQ+ cruise ship featuring Patti LuPone was denied entry into Egypt on Friday after previously being blocked from docking in Turkey. The cruise, operated by Virgin Voyages on the Scarlet Lady, was scheduled to make a stop in Egypt following the Turkish authorities' refusal to allow it in their waters. Rich Campbell, president and CEO of Atlantis Events, confirmed the last-minute denial of clearance by Egyptian officials.
Patti LuPone's Response to the Blockade
Patti LuPone expressed her outrage on social media after the ship was turned away from Turkey. On July 2, she posted on Instagram, stating, "I am shocked. The Atlantis cruise I am performing on next week has been banned from entering Turkey. A ship — a magnificent ship — full of gay men. And me. Denied entry to Turkey simply because of who is on board." Despite the setback, LuPone remained determined to entertain the cruise passengers.
In her post, she added, "I am furious, but I am sailing, as the ship will make other ports of call. I am ready to perform for all the wonderful men on this Atlantis cruise, who deserve so much better than this." This determination highlights the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community amidst ongoing discrimination.
Reasons Behind the Denial
While Egyptian authorities have not publicly stated their reasons for blocking the cruise ship, a statement from the Aydin government referenced concerns about the group's values not aligning with those of Egyptian society. They announced the cancellation of the ship's docking at Aydin Kuşadası Port on July 7, 2026, citing discomfort among various societal segments.
