At least 15 Indian tourists lost their lives when a boat capsized off the coast of Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, on Saturday. The incident occurred approximately 400 meters from May Rut Ngoai islet, with 36 people on board at the time of the accident. Rescue efforts involved multiple tourist and coast guard vessels, successfully saving 21 individuals from the water.
Details of the Incident
According to reports from VnExpress, the boat overturned unexpectedly, prompting a swift response from local authorities. Coast guard teams and other boats rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations. All deceased individuals have been recovered, as confirmed by the authorities.
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam has released the names of all 32 Indians who were on board the ill-fated vessel. The embassy stated, "In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago." They have established control rooms in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to assist and provide information to the families affected.
Response from Indian Officials
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via social media, stating that the tourists were participating in an annual meeting organized by a private mobile phone company. Many of those onboard were employees and distributors of Lava Mobile from the state of Andhra Pradesh.
