The former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has died at the age of 74, as announced by the Amiri Diwan on July 12, 2026. The Amiri Diwan expressed deep sorrow, stating, “With hearts steadfast in faith in God’s decree and destiny, the Amiri Diwan mourns the great loss to the nation of the late – may God have mercy on him – His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away this morning.”
Sheikh Hamad's Impact on Qatar's Development
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, during which he was a pivotal figure in the country’s transformation into a prominent nation on the global stage. His leadership catalyzed economic, social, and cultural advancements that significantly enhanced Qatar's international standing. Under his rule, Qatar emerged as the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, establishing crucial international partnerships that fueled its growth.
His tenure also included the launch of the Al Jazeera News Channel in 1996, which became one of the most influential media networks globally. Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani, director general of Al Jazeera Media Network, noted, “He was the visionary behind the original idea and the one who laid the foundations of this great media institution.”

Qatar has declared a four-day period of public mourning starting from the day of his passing, with government work suspended and flags lowered to half-mast.
