On Tuesday night, a cargo plane operated by K2 Airways lost contact with air traffic control while flying over the Arabian Sea near Ormara, Pakistan. The aircraft, which had reported a technical issue, was en route from Sharjah in the UAE to Karachi. Authorities confirmed the wreckage was found Wednesday, but the five crew members remain missing.
Search and Rescue Efforts Underway
After the plane went missing, rescuers scoured the waters for over 12 hours despite challenging conditions due to rough monsoon seas. The Pakistan Navy and the maritime rescue agency are leading the coordinated efforts to locate the missing crew, consisting of two pilots, two engineers, and a support staff member.
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) stated that it is collaborating with the Pakistani Civil Aviation Authority in the search operation. In a statement, the airline expressed its commitment to finding the missing crew, saying, "We continue to pray, earnestly, for the safety of our colleagues." Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended his condolences to the families of the crew members.
Details of the Incident
The missing aircraft is a Boeing 737 cargo plane, which previously served as a passenger plane before being converted in 2012. It was manufactured in 1999 and is noted to be part of an older generation of the 737 family.
