On July 6, 2026, a massive Russian attack on Kyiv resulted in at least 22 deaths and numerous injuries. This assault targeted residential buildings and infrastructure, reflecting Russian President Vladimir Putin's intent to intimidate NATO ahead of its summit in Ankara. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned citizens of a potential large-scale attack, urging them to remain vigilant and heed air raid warnings.
Details of the Attack on Kyiv
The recent bombardment involved the launch of 68 missiles, including Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 3M22 Zircon cruise missiles, alongside 351 drones. Ukrainian forces intercepted a significant number of the cruise missiles; however, they failed to defend against any ballistic missiles due to a shortage of Patriot missiles. Yurii Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine's Air Force, emphasized this critical shortage as a major factor in the attack's devastation.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's Defense Minister, condemned the attacks, stating, "Ballistic attacks are once again hitting civilians." He noted that as Russia struggles on the battlefield, it increasingly targets residential areas, resulting in civilian casualties.
Putin's Intentions and NATO's Response
Analysts suggest that this attack is a strategic move by Putin to demonstrate Russia's strength and resilience, particularly to NATO allies. Oleksandr Kraiev, an analyst at Ukrainian Prism, stated, "He wants to intimidate Europeans and NATO allies so that at some point they view their support for Ukraine as pointless." The attack serves as a message that regardless of NATO's support, Russia remains a formidable threat.
