Nintendo announced on July 6, 2026, that it will stop selling the original Switch console in Europe starting in mid-February 2027. This decision coincides with an update to the Switch 2 aimed at meeting new European battery regulations.
Nintendo's Decision to Halt Original Switch Sales
The cessation of sales includes all versions of the original Switch family, comprising the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model. The company confirmed that from mid-February 2027, these products will no longer be available to retailers or through the Nintendo Store in Europe.
According to Nintendo, this decision aligns with the upcoming EU regulations that mandate user-replaceable batteries in electronic devices. The original Switch, launched in March 2017, has had a successful run, but the company is now focusing on future hardware developments.
Transitioning to the Switch 2 and Other Devices
Nintendo is preparing to introduce updated versions of its devices, including the anticipated Switch 2, which is set to be released in the fall of 2026. This new console will feature a replaceable battery, adhering to the new regulations that come into effect on February 18, 2027.
