Russia launched a series of missile and drone strikes on Kyiv on July 6, 2026, resulting in at least 24 fatalities and over 100 injuries. This attack occurred just before a pivotal NATO summit where President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to seek enhanced air defense support from allies.
Details of the Attack on Kyiv
The strikes targeted residential areas, hitting apartment buildings in the Podilsky district of Kyiv. According to Ukrainian authorities, this was the second major assault within a week, following a previous strike that claimed more than 30 lives. The morning attack created significant destruction, with eyewitnesses reporting more than 10 explosions during a missile alert.
Sixteen victims were confirmed in Kyiv, while an additional eight were killed in Vyshneve, a nearby town. Emergency services worked tirelessly to search through the wreckage for survivors and recover bodies.
Zelensky's Plea for Enhanced Defense
In the aftermath of the strikes, President Zelensky condemned the assault as a brutal tactic aimed at inflicting maximum pain on Ukraine. He emphasized the need for improved air defense mechanisms against ballistic missiles, stating, "It is simply absurd that in the modern world, production has still not been organized to the extent that is necessary to protect people from ballistic terror."
