Dances With Wolves, the acclaimed 1990 western directed by Kevin Costner, will have its 4K restored extended director's cut premiere at the 79th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on August 7. This special screening will take place in the festival's Piazza Grande square, showcasing over half an hour of previously unseen footage.
Details of the Restoration and Premiere
The restoration was carried out by Zurich-based laboratory Cinegrell, in partnership with the Locarno Heritage project and K5 International, its international sales agent. According to festival organizers, this nearly four-hour edition allows audiences to experience Costner's epic as it was originally intended.
“Costner’s western epic, which won seven Academy Awards, including best picture and best director, helped redefine the western at the turn of the 1990s,” remarked the festival. The film notably drew global attention to the historical plight of Indigenous peoples in America.
