At Euro 2020, Jeremy Doku made a significant impact as a young winger for Belgium, showcasing his talent on the world stage. The 19-year-old's breakthrough performance against Italy in the quarter-finals marked a turning point in his career. Doku's journey from that moment has been one of growth and recognition.
Doku's Standout Performance at Euro 2020
During the tournament, Belgium dominated the group stage, winning all three matches against Denmark, Finland, and Russia. In the last-16, they triumphed over Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, setting the stage for a high-stakes quarter-final against Italy. Doku, who was playing for Anderlecht at the time, was included in coach Roberto Martínez's starting lineup.
In that match, Doku was instrumental, winning a penalty that Romelu Lukaku converted just before halftime. He also set a record for the most duels won during the tournament. Reflecting on his performance, Doku stated, “That game changed my life. After that, people would come up to me on the street, they recognised me and I became more popular.”
Challenges Following the Euros
Despite his success at Euro 2020, Doku faced challenges in the following months. He played only a few minutes at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, coming on as a substitute in Belgium's final group stage match against Croatia. The team, which had high expectations, failed to advance past the group stage.
