A German court has sentenced Twana H.S. to life in prison and Asia R.A. to nine and a half years for enslaving and abusing two Yazidi girls during their time with the Islamic State in Iraq. The ruling, delivered on Monday, marks a significant step in addressing war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.
Details of the Enslavement Case
The couple was convicted for their involvement in the enslavement of two Yazidi girls, aged 5 and 12, whom they purchased as slaves in Iraq. The court found that they subjected the girls to severe abuse, forced labor, and torture. The male defendant was specifically found guilty of sexually abusing the children, while the female defendant aided in these heinous acts.
According to the representative of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, “The monstrous violence is so far removed from any sense of humanity that it seems unreal.” This statement underscores the gravity of the couple's actions and the impact on the victims.
Impact on Victims and Court Proceedings
One of the enslaved girls attended the trial and was visibly emotional as the verdict was announced. In her testimony, she expressed deep anguish, stating, “even dogs were held in higher regard than we were.” The presiding judge, Philipp Stoll, highlighted that this ruling represents the first conviction in Germany for forced religious conversion, specifically the coercion of the girls from Yazidism to Islam.
