Killings continue at Del Monte's pineapple farm in Kenya, raising alarm among families and politicians. Three men, including two brothers, were reportedly killed in separate incidents involving G4S guards over the past year. The multinational food company hired G4S for security after previous deaths were exposed, but the violence persists.
Recent Fatalities Linked to G4S Security
The tragic incidents include the deaths of Stephen Marubu Kibandi, Haron Kame Kibandi, and Michael Muiruri. Stephen, 34, was shot by a police officer working with G4S guards last August after he raised his hands in surrender. Witnesses claim he was shot despite not posing a threat.
Haron, 27, died from brain injuries in April 2024 after allegedly being struck by stones thrown by G4S guards, leading to a fall from a motorbike. Michael, 31, was killed after being knocked off his motorbike by a G4S truck. Families are demanding accountability and justice for their loved ones.
Ongoing Security Concerns and Calls for Investigation
Despite the appointment of G4S to enhance security, concerns about the use of lethal force by guards remain. The Kenyan police have been collaborating with G4S, establishing a “critical infrastructure protection unit” to improve safety at the farm. However, campaigners fear that police involvement complicates prosecutions of lethal force incidents.
