Bea Elton has carved a unique niche in the cleaning industry, focusing on homes that have fallen into severe disrepair. Her work, often involving hazardous materials, aims to help individuals struggling with mental health issues. In a recent cleaning job, Elton faced a particularly daunting task involving a home filled with garbage and neglect.
Building Trust with Homeowners
Elton, 28, emphasizes the importance of trust when working with clients. "It can take months building trust with a stranger," she explains. During her initial conversations with homeowners, she learns about their struggles, which often include mental health challenges.
In one case, a homeowner suffering from depression and ADHD had let their living space deteriorate over the years. Elton noted, "There might be a dead bird in the box room. We think it has been there for a couple of years." This highlights the emotional toll that such neglect can take on individuals.
The Cleaning Process
Equipped with hazmat suits, Elton and her boyfriend, Harry, tackle the overwhelming mess. They sift through layers of waste, which can include food wrappers, broken appliances, and even animal waste. "It’s upsetting we can’t recycle any of it; it’s covered in cat urine, it is a biohazard," Elton remarks as she works.
