FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Friday that officials will evaluate the potential expansion of the World Cup to 64 teams for the 2030 tournament. This follows the increase from 32 to 48 teams for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, making it a significant shift in the tournament's structure.
Potential Expansion of World Cup Teams
Infantino stated that expanding the World Cup by adding another 16 teams could make sense. He emphasized the importance of allowing every nation the chance to participate in this global event. “That’s definitely an issue that will be examined and discussed in the relevant committees after this World Cup,” he mentioned.
The FIFA president highlighted the increasing quality of teams worldwide, asserting, “If you don’t give smaller countries a chance to participate in the World Cup, they’ll lack the incentive to keep improving.” This statement reflects FIFA's commitment to inclusivity in international football.
Success of the 48-Team Format
The current 2026 World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams, a change Infantino considers a “huge success.” He noted that teams from all continents scored goals and earned points, showcasing the enhanced competitiveness of the tournament.
