In March 2019, comedian Eric Lampaert experienced total amnesia, waking up unable to recognize his friends or even his own name. This profound event marked a turning point in his life, leading him to explore the depths of his memory and identity. Now, he is set to unveil his new show, Zero Minus One, at the Edinburgh Festival, where he shares his journey of recovery and self-rediscovery.
The Day Everything Changed
On that fateful morning, Lampaert noticed his hands moving, but the reality of his amnesia soon became apparent. He recalls, "Eric?" his neighbor asked at the door, to which he replied, "I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know…" This moment marked the beginning of a long journey to regain his memory.
Diagnosed with confusion delirium and symptoms of amnesia, Lampaert’s life took a dramatic turn. He describes his experience as losing not just his memories but also his sense of self, stating, "I get that you’re this guy’s mum, but as far as I’m concerned, Eric died." Regaining his memory felt like a rebirth, as he struggled to reconcile his past with his present.
Rebuilding Identity Through Performance
In Zero Minus One, Lampaert presents a two-hander performance, portraying both patient and doctor. The show explores his internal struggle and the voices in his head, including his own self-perception and societal expectations. He reflects, "I’m always aware that I’m wearing Eric’s skin," highlighting the dissociative experience that accompanied his amnesia.
