The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) has become renowned not just for its cinematic offerings but also for its distinctive trailers, crafted by Ivan Zachariáš. Since 2008, these edgy shorts have featured numerous stars, becoming a festival staple. This year, audiences anticipate the latest trailer starring Benicio del Toro, set to debut at the festival.
Ivan Zachariáš: The Creative Force Behind KVIFF Trailers
Ivan Zachariáš, a celebrated Czech director recognized for his Cannes Lions awards, has transformed the KVIFF trailers into a unique art form. The trailers, often shot in black-and-white, blend humor with the festival's prestigious Crystal Globe. Zachariáš's journey began in 2004 with a series of short films featuring Eddie Marsan, but it was in 2008 that he established the signature style that fans have come to love.
“I came up with a concept of short B&W films with actors and directors who’ve been awarded by the festival in the past,” Zachariáš explained. The trailers have featured notable figures such as Johnny Depp, Helen Mirren, and Javier Bardem, with each film showcasing the award in a humorous light.
The Challenges of Trailer Production
Despite the fun and creativity involved, producing these trailers comes with its challenges. Zachariáš recounted a particularly stressful shoot with Benicio del Toro, who had only two hours available between filming. “We had to mark every camera position and lens in advance,” he said, highlighting the frantic pace required to meet tight schedules.
