Midjourney, an AI startup known for its image generation technology, unveiled a new video on July 3, 2026, showcasing its innovative medical scanner. However, the video, produced by YouTuber Marcin Plaza, has left many experts questioning the device's imaging capabilities and its potential impact on the medical field.
Midjourney's Scanner: A Closer Look
The video highlights the hardware behind Midjourney's dunk-tank ultrasound scanner, which the company envisions deploying in wellness spas. Plaza describes the scanner as a collection of ultrasound probes “hacked apart and slapped on a glorified hot tub with an elevator in it,” raising eyebrows about its engineering and effectiveness.
Despite the visual appeal, experts have criticized Midjourney for not providing sufficient proof of the scanner's efficacy. They pointed out that the company has yet to demonstrate how it plans to overcome the established limitations of ultrasound technology, which has been in use for decades.
Focus on Body Composition Over Diagnostics
During the video, Tom Calloway, head of medical at Midjourney, emphasized that the scanner will initially serve as a wellness product aimed at assessing body composition. This decision allows the company to expedite its launch without needing FDA clearance or extensive clinical trials. Calloway stated, "We can speedrun and open right away once testing is complete." This approach has prompted discussions about the implications of marketing a device with medical language while not positioning it as a diagnostic tool.
