Artist Jonathan Bruce Williams has filed a lawsuit against Kai Matsumiya, a gallery in New York, claiming the gallery owes him over $16,000 for two artworks sold during his 2025 exhibition. The suit was filed last month in the Civil Court of the City of New York.
Details of the Lawsuit Against Kai Matsumiya
According to the lawsuit, Williams alleges that two pieces from his exhibition were sold for a total of $22,600 to an art collection managed by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Williams had previously agreed to split the proceeds with the gallery, with Matsumiya retaining 50 percent. The exhibition concluded on November 1, 2025.
Despite making repeated requests for payment, Williams claims that the gallery has not remitted the amounts owed. The lawsuit indicates that a formal demand for payment was sent in May, yet no payment has been made.
Gallery's Response to the Allegations
In response to the allegations, Kai Matsumiya, the gallery's founding dealer, stated that Williams has already been paid and that the matter is resolved. However, the lawsuit remains pending in court.
