On July 4, the Trump White House released a 162-page report from the Domestic Policy Council accusing the Smithsonian Institution of prioritizing political activism over scholarship at the National Museum of American History (NMAH). The report alleges that the museum presents a distorted view of American history, focusing on systemic racism and oppression.
Accusations of Ideological Capture
The report, titled “Saving America’s Story,” claims that NMAH has succumbed to what it describes as “ideological capture.” It cites various exhibitions, including the controversial 2022 show “Upending 1620,” which reframed the narrative of early American settlers. According to the report, the museum portrays the United States as a nation fundamentally rooted in white supremacy and systemic injustice.
Specific elements of the museum's current exhibitions, particularly those aimed at children and young adults, have come under scrutiny. The report criticizes educational materials that discuss gender identity and roles, arguing that they advocate for political viewpoints rather than historical accuracy.
Targeted Programs and Initiatives
The report takes particular issue with several programs, including the “Becoming US” curriculum and initiatives that engage with undocumented immigrant organizers. It asserts that these programs push for policies favoring illegal immigration and voting rights for non-citizens. The NMAH's commitment to addressing contemporary issues such as race, gender, and environmental changes is framed as a departure from its historical mission.
