Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as Fulham's new head coach, confirmed on Tuesday after departing from Real Madrid at the end of last season. Arbeloa has signed a three-year contract at Craven Cottage, stepping in to replace Marco Silva, who has taken the reins at Benfica.
Arbeloa's Transition to Fulham
Marco Silva's move to Benfica follows a brief tenure where he replaced José Mourinho, who has now returned to Real Madrid. Arbeloa, who previously managed Real Madrid, faced challenges during his time there, culminating in a trophyless season. Fulham owner Shahid Khan expressed confidence in Arbeloa's capabilities, stating, "Álvaro was an original candidate who built an exceptional case through our meetings in June to become our next Head Coach."
Khan added, "I am delighted that Alvaro has accepted the challenge to push Fulham forward, and I have no doubt that our squad, staff and fans will resonate with what his appointment means for the present and future of our Club." Arbeloa's previous experience as a player in the Premier League with Liverpool adds to his credentials.
Challenges Faced by Arbeloa
During his time at Real Madrid, Arbeloa was appointed head coach in January after the dismissal of Xabi Alonso. However, the team's performance led to a disappointing second consecutive season without silverware. The former Spain international is now tasked with revitalizing Fulham, who finished 11th in the Premier League last season.
