England faces a significant right-back crisis as they prepare for their World Cup quarter-final against Norway on Saturday. With concerns over the fitness of key players like Reece James and Djed Spence, manager Thomas Tuchel must find a solution to bolster the defense.
Current State of England's Right-Back Options
The situation for England's right-back position is dire. Reece James, the first choice, has not trained for two weeks due to a hamstring strain. Although he is recovering, it’s uncertain if he can contribute significantly in the quarter-final. Meanwhile, Djed Spence is also dealing with a minor injury, having missed training before the last 16 match against Mexico.
With Jarell Quansah suspended after receiving a red card, Tuchel's options are limited. If neither James nor Spence can play, the role may fall to Ezri Konsa, who has shown capability in that position but would require a defensive reshuffle, potentially moving John Stones to center-back.
Impact of Injuries on England's Defense
Injuries have plagued England's right side since the tournament began. Initially, the team had two specialist right-backs, but both have fitness issues. Tuchel's decision to call up Trevoh Chalobah to replace Tino Livramento has raised eyebrows, given Chalobah's lack of experience in that role.
