A court in Tirana, Albania has released 19 protesters who were detained during a violent demonstration against a luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump. The protests, which have been ongoing since May 2026, were sparked by opposition to construction near a protected coastal area.
Details of the Protest and Arrests
The protesters were arrested on charges of "refusing to obey police orders, organizing illegal demonstrations, and disturbing public order," according to their lawyer, Dorian Matlija. Following their release on July 5, 2026, two individuals will serve house arrest, while 12 must report to judicial authorities monthly. Five protesters will face no charges.
The protests began as a response to the unveiling of the resort project in 2024, escalating significantly when construction equipment appeared on local beaches in late May. The protests have evolved beyond opposition to the resort, becoming a broader movement against perceived government corruption.
Escalation of Protests and Government Response
On July 4, 2026, tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the prime minister's office, chanting slogans like "Free the boys" and calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. The protests have seen a notable increase in intensity, particularly following violent clashes outside the Albanian parliament where police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds.
