The Ukrainian Air Force reported a devastating attack on Kyiv, where nine individuals lost their lives during Russian missile strikes on July 6, 2026. The assault occurred on the eve of a NATO summit in Turkey, raising concerns about air defense support for Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelensky called for urgent action from allies.
Details of the Attack on Kyiv
According to officials, the attack involved 23 ballistic missiles launched by Russia, with none intercepted due to a "serious shortage" of interceptor missiles. In total, at least 15 deaths were recorded in the capital, while eight more were reported in the surrounding Kyiv region. The Ukrainian military claimed to have successfully intercepted cruise missiles and drones, but the ballistic missiles caused significant destruction.
Following the assault, President Zelensky emphasized the absurdity of the situation, stating that it is unacceptable that production of necessary defense systems has not been scaled up. He noted that the Russian attack included a staggering 68 missiles and 351 strike drones, with Ukrainian forces managing to down 37 missiles and 326 drones.
Impact on Civilians and Infrastructure
The aftermath of the missile strikes revealed widespread devastation across Kyiv. Three apartment blocks partially collapsed, and rescue teams worked tirelessly to search for survivors among the rubble. The State Emergency Service reported 56 injuries in the capital, including seven children, with another 48 injuries noted in the wider region.
