On July 6, 2026, Russia launched a series of missile and drone strikes on the Kyiv region, resulting in at least 28 fatalities. This attack occurred just before the NATO Heads of State and Government Summit in Ankara, prompting urgent calls for increased military support for Ukraine from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
Escalating Violence in Kyiv Region
Russian forces targeted Kyiv with missiles and drones, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. According to Ukrainian officials, the death toll from this assault has risen to 28 people, with over 56 injured. Rescuers worked through the rubble of damaged buildings, including a high-rise in Kyiv that was severely affected by the bombardment.
The Ukrainian air force reported that it failed to intercept any of the 23 ballistic missiles fired by Russia during this attack, highlighting a critical shortage of air defense systems.
NATO's Response and Support for Ukraine
During the NATO summit, Secretary-General Rutte emphasized the necessity for member states to ensure Ukraine receives adequate support to defend its sovereignty. He stated, "NATO partners must continue to ensure Ukraine gets what it needs to defend itself." This comes amid calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the US to provide licenses to manufacture Patriot missile systems locally.
