Zaporizhzhia, a city in eastern Ukraine, has experienced a sharp increase in Russian attacks targeting civilians, schools, and public transport. On July 11, 2026, residents like Anna Holovchenko were jolted awake by glide bombs, highlighting the escalating security crisis in a city just 24 km from the front line.

Escalating Attacks on Zaporizhzhia

The city, home to around 750,000 people, has seen numerous Russian drone and bomb strikes in recent weeks. Anna, an IT specialist, reported that she is frequently disturbed by the sounds of explosions. "That’s just another ordinary day in Zaporizhzhia," she stated, illustrating the grim reality faced by locals.

According to acting mayor Regina Kharchenko, the city council met in an underground shelter to address the increasing terror against civilians. She remarked, "The enemy has stepped up terror against civilians, municipal transport, privately-owned buses, cars, residential buildings, and even children." This alarming situation has prompted city officials to devise plans for more shelters and anti-drone measures.

Impact of Advanced Drone Warfare

Ukrainian air defenses are struggling to counter new tactics employed by Russian forces. Sam Cranny-Evans from the Royal United Services Institute explained that Russian forces are utilizing longer-range mothership drones to deploy smaller drones over greater distances. This change in strategy has made it more challenging for Ukrainian defenses to intercept attacks.

Despite the ongoing threat, many residents choose to remain in Zaporizhzhia. Anna expressed her determination, saying, "We’ve got food and fuel, why would I leave? Maybe I’m not the easily scared type." Local authorities are working to enhance safety measures, including applying anti-shatter film to windows in schools and hospitals.
