Director Jon Erwin of the film Young Washington has shared insights on how artificial intelligence (AI) contributed to the film's production, making it both safer and more affordable. The historical drama, featuring William Franklyn-Miller as a young George Washington, premieres nationwide on July 3, 2026.
AI Enhances Film Safety and Affordability
Erwin explained that the film's team faced a significant challenge when filming a scene that required a pre-Revolutionary War Washington to nearly drown in an icy river. Subjecting actors or stunt doubles to such cold conditions posed safety risks. To navigate this, Erwin and his crew constructed a 50-foot pool in Ireland and used a blend of traditional filming techniques and AI tools.
By utilizing AI, the production team could generate wider shots of the scene without endangering the cast. This innovative approach illustrates how technology can enhance filmmaking while prioritizing safety. “We had to ensure the actors were safe, and AI allowed us to create the necessary visuals without putting them at risk,” Erwin stated.
Innovative Techniques in Filmmaking
The combination of practical effects and AI tools marks a notable shift in production methods. Erwin emphasized that, while advanced visual effects tools are beneficial, they cannot replicate the complexities of natural elements like water. The use of AI in this context not only streamlined the filming process but also enhanced the overall visual storytelling.
