As wind turbines reach the end of their life cycle, the renewable energy sector faces a significant challenge. On July 4, 2026, two Northern Irish companies revealed their efforts to recycle decommissioned wind turbine blades into sustainable products, addressing the growing waste issue in the industry.
Transforming Waste into Reusable Materials
With over 400 wind turbines in Northern Ireland expected to be replaced in the next 15 years, the disposal of blades poses an environmental threat. Andrew Billingsley, CEO of Plaswire Ltd, emphasized the need for a circular economy, stating, "The issue today is, I could say, colossal." Currently, around 125,000 tonnes of blades are improperly disposed of globally, often ending up in landfills or incineration.
Plaswire has developed a method to convert these blades into a durable, reusable material. This innovation allows the production of alternative timber products, such as fence posts and transport pallets, significantly reducing carbon emissions associated with traditional plastic manufacturing methods.
Innovative Technology for Sustainability
Another Northern Irish firm, Ubloquity, is utilizing technology to enhance the traceability of recycled products. Founder Kieran Kelly explained how they attach QR codes and radio frequency technology to products, enabling consumers to track their journey from production to disposal. "Hold your phone close to the product and the product will actually transmit and tell you the story through a mobile device," Kelly stated.
