At least 12 people died in a wildfire that swept through the Los Gallardos area of Almeria, southern Spain, on Friday. Authorities reported that some victims were found inside vehicles as the blaze ravaged the region during a severe heatwave.
Details of the Tragic Incident in Almeria
The wildfire broke out late Thursday, devastating the hamlet and prompting emergency responses from regional authorities. According to Andalusia's minister for emergencies, Antonio Sanz, "everything appears to indicate that the majority, or possibly all, of those who died were foreigners." Formal identifications of the victims are still ongoing.
In addition to the fatalities, eight people sustained injuries, and another 23 individuals remain unaccounted for. The regional government has mobilized approximately 150 firefighters and 220 soldiers from Spain’s military emergency unit to combat the fire, which has consumed over 3,200 hectares of forest and farmland.
Possible Causes and Responses to the Wildfire
Witnesses reported that the fire may have ignited after a power line fell, setting dry vegetation ablaze. However, authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause. As the fire spread, roads were closed, and residents were evacuated, with around 50 people temporarily housed in a cultural center.
