Weight-loss drugs are transforming shopping habits for millions in the UK and US. As users of GLP-1 medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro experience significant weight loss, their clothing choices and spending patterns are changing dramatically. This shift was highlighted by research from PwC, which noted that 5% of UK adults are currently using these drugs, with numbers expected to rise to 13% by the end of next year.
Impact of GLP-1 Drugs on Consumer Behavior
As individuals drop sizes, they are not only changing their wardrobes but also increasing their overall spending on apparel and related products. Hayley Grice, a 50-year-old from Shropshire, who lost seven sizes after starting Mounjaro, expressed her newfound confidence: “I’m very happy with my physique right now.” She now shops in standard stores instead of plus-size retailers, illustrating a broader trend among users of these medications.
In the US, where 21% of adults have tried GLP-1 drugs, spending on clothing, groceries, and alcohol has shifted significantly. This trend is mirrored in the UK, where nearly 3 million people are currently on these drugs. PwC indicates that GLP-1 medications are creating a new consumer demographic, significantly affecting shopping habits.
Demographics of GLP-1 Users
Research shows that approximately 60% of GLP-1 users are women, with a notable portion coming from diverse income backgrounds. About 6% of users are from lower-income households, while 20% belong to the wealthiest demographic. Notably, 83% of potential users indicated they would prefer a pill form of the medication, which is expected to boost uptake further.
