More than 58,000 buildings have been estimated damaged or destroyed by the recent earthquakes in Venezuela, which struck on last Wednesday. The twin earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in at least 1,943 fatalities and over 10,571 injuries. With tens of thousands still unaccounted for, the scale of the disaster is becoming clearer through preliminary satellite data.
Magnitude of the Damage
The earthquakes have left a significant impact on the region. Initial assessments suggest the destruction could far exceed official estimates. The UN migration agency has reported that up to 6.8 million people could be affected, requiring urgent assistance.
Local authorities are overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster. The need for shelter, water, sanitation, healthcare, and essential relief items is critical as rescue efforts continue amidst the rubble.
