Authorities in the United States have charged Lawrence Bishnoi, the leader of an Indian organized crime group, in connection with the assassination of prominent Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The charges were announced on July 8, 2026, during a press conference at FBI offices in Los Angeles, California, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the US, Canada, and India.
Details of the Assassination Charges
The federal charges against Bishnoi are part of a broader law enforcement operation that involved agencies from the US, Canada, and Europe. A total of 37 defendants were implicated, allegedly connected to three international crime syndicates involved in various crimes including kidnappings, racketeering, extortion, firearms dealing, drug trafficking, and murder. This operation underscores the extensive reach of these criminal organizations.
Bishnoi and his associate, Satinderjeet Singh, are accused of orchestrating Nijjar's assassination, which took place in 2023 outside a temple in Canada where he served as president. Nijjar was a prominent figure in the movement for an independent Sikh homeland known as Khalistan.
Impact on Canada-India Relations
The assassination has significantly strained diplomatic relations between Canada and India. Following the killing, then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated there were “credible allegations” implicating the Indian government in Nijjar's death. This statement led to both countries expelling diplomats amid rising tensions.
