Ukrainian Sports Minister Matviy Bidnyi expressed his outrage on Tuesday over the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to lift restrictions on Russian athletes, calling it deeply unfair. Bidnyi urged IOC President Kirsty Coventry to visit Ukraine to witness the ongoing impact of the war firsthand.
IOC's Controversial Decision
On Tuesday, the IOC announced that the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) would no longer be restricted from international competitions. This decision sparked immediate backlash from Bidnyi, who stated, "Together with all Ukrainians and the entire clean sports community worldwide, I am profoundly outraged." He emphasized the disrespect shown to the memory of hundreds of Ukrainian athletes killed by Russian forces.
In his statement, Bidnyi called for Coventry to come to Ukraine, saying, "I want her to stand on our train platforms and see our defenders saying goodbye to their children before leaving for the frontline." He insisted that witnessing the realities of life in Ukraine would change the IOC's stance on Russian athletes competing as neutrals.
Misleading Exclusions in IOC Statement
The IOC's statement claimed that the ROC had excluded all regional sports organizations in territories under Ukrainian jurisdiction. However, Bidnyi countered that the ROC had excluded all 89 of its regional organizations, not just those in occupied areas. He stated, "A direct exclusion of only Ukrainian territories would be perceived inside Russia as a sign of weakness."
