The United Kingdom is set to experience temperatures exceeding 30C (86F) for up to 10 consecutive days, prompting amber heat-health alerts from the UK Health Security Agency. Effective from 09:00 BST on 8 July until 21:00 BST on 12 July, these alerts apply to the Midlands, eastern, and southern England, with yellow alerts in northern regions.
Intensifying Heatwave Expected Across England
According to meteorological forecasts, temperatures are predicted to rise significantly from midweek. By Wednesday and Thursday, regions such as London and south-east England might experience peak temperatures around 34C (93F). This third heatwave of the year follows a previous extreme event in late June, which recorded a staggering 37.7C.
During this upcoming heatwave, parts of south-east England have already met the official heatwave criteria, and other regions are expected to do so as the week progresses. The forecast suggests a gradual build-up of heat, with daytime highs reaching the high 20s and low 30s Celsius.
Health Risks Associated with Prolonged High Temperatures
The UK Health Security Agency warns of significant health impacts due to these rising temperatures, particularly for vulnerable populations. Elderly individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions are at greater risk, with a potential increase in heat-related deaths. Public health officials are urging citizens to take necessary precautions during this prolonged period of high temperatures.
